¶ Cicero — De officiis (1480)

June 23, 2017

Comments Off on ¶ Cicero — De officiis (1480)

Cicero, Marcus Tullius. De officiis. Venice: Filippo di Pietro, 8 May 1480.

This book was not sold by Sotheby in 1898, probably because Morris had disposed of it before his death. However, he owned another copy which did in fact appear in the Sotheby sale.

Digital version: BSB.

Comments Off on ¶ Cicero (1480) and Festus (1478?)

The following titles are bound together:

[1] Cicero, Marcus Tullius. De officiis. Venice: Filippo di Pietro, 8 May 1480.

The Sotheby catalogue does not specify the edition, and MS catalogue (2) records it as “c. 1480”; we believe this is the most likely candidate.

Reference: ISTC (if00145000).

Digital version: BSB.

Provenance: Morris. — Richard Bennett. — Sotheby 1898, lot 362 (sold to Proctor for £1 1s.). — Robert Proctor. — Phillips, 13 November 1997, lot 258 (£2,400 [$4,053]). — Unlocated.

¶ Aesop — Vita et fabulae (c. 1480)

September 8, 2014

Aesop [Aesopus]. Vita et fabulae. [Augsburg: Anton Sorg, c. 1480.]

Illustrated.

Note by Morris on flyleaf: “The woodcuts in this Aesop are from the same blocks as in the first edition, and are amongst the very best of the School of Ulm and Augsburg; itself the best school of German gothic woodcuts. The designs are admirable for force of expression both of feature and action; the accessories are most interesting and full of character, and in short the story is always told in the most direct and the clearest manner that the limited method (which is the best and most ornamental method for book decoration) will allow of. The cutting is worthy of the designs, the lines being always firm and rich, and never cut away; and everything necessary is done unfailingly[.] Some of these cuts seem by the same hand as those of John Zainer’s ‘Boccaccio de Claris mulieribus’; who again may have designed at least some of those of the Speculum Humanae Vitae, printed by Günther Zainer.”

Provenance: Morris. — Richard Bennett. — J. Pierpont Morgan. — Morgan Library (ChL348).
