¶ Marx — Capital (1872–75)

May 1, 2014

Marx, Karl. Le capital. Trans. Joseph Roy. Paris: Maurice Lachatre et Cie, [1872–75].

The first French edition, issued in fascicules. After Morris’s death, Cockerell persuaded T. J. Cobden-Sanderson to write the following note in the book: “This book—Le Capital—was bound and tooled for William Morris in my first workshop in Maiden Lane, 1884, and finished the 9th October, and the pattern on its sides and back is the second of my making. The tools were second-hand and bought—and used—at haphazard, but the binding and the tooling pleased William Morris, and his pleasure was my own great delight. In memoriam I write this the 24th February, 1897. T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. ¶ I should like to add that the book was his own, & before it came to me to be bound had been worn to loose sections by his own constant study of it. T.J. C.-S.” (Journals, 1:385).

The entry from the Sotheby 1898 catalogue (see below) is pasted on an endpaper with this note by Cobden-Sanderson: “Cat. of sale of Lib. of W.M. at Sotheby’s Dec. 8, 1898. T.J. C.-S.” A further inscription adds: “bought at the Morris Sale Dec. 8th, 1898 and presented to Mrs. Cobden-Sanderson by T. G. Bain Sunday Dec. 11th/98.”

Provenance: Morris (purchased in Paris, 1883). — Richard Bennett. — Sotheby 1898, lot 676 (sold to Bain for £52). — Bain (booksellers). — Annie Cobden-Sanderson (gift from T. G. Bain, December 1898). — Richard Cobden-Sanderson. — Sotheby, 19 December 1932, lot 31. — Alice Millard (bookseller). — Estelle Doheny. — Edward Laurence Doheny Memorial Library, St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo, Calif. — Christie (New York), 19 May 1989, lot 2235 [Estelle Doheny collection, part 6] — J. Paul Getty (Wormsley Library, private collection, England) — Mark Getty (Wormsley Library).
